Hello. I'm Steve Hudgik and this is my first attempt at publishing
a magazine. Oh, oh - I suppose that doesn't give you a lot of
confidence in this being a great magazine! Well, it fits with
my philosophy of getting to the point and telling things like they
are. And that's what this magazine will be like. It'll get to the
point and provide useful information in a straight forward, concise
manner.
So, here I am, not knowing much about magazines. But like
many things I do, I've decided that the best way to get started is
to go ahead and do it! That's the first step in my formula for
success - DO SOMETHING! You'll never get anywhere by sitting
around thinking about what you want to do and taking no
action. So I'm going ahead and we'll see how it turns out. Here
is the first issue.
I do have to admit I'm not new to publishing. I wrote the book
"Writing & Marketing Shareware", which is published by McGraw-
Hill. I wrote that book with the same philosophy I am using
with this magazine - I got started by DOING SOMETHING. I wrote
it for myself and published the first edition myself. After
I had 500 copies stacked up in my living room, McGraw-Hill became
interested and decided to publish the second edition. (I still
have copies of that first edition. If you'd like one, send me
$5.00 to cover the shipping costs and I'll be happy to send you a
copy).
I am also a successful full-time shareware author and publisher
with over 22 programs currently offered. Several of my
programs have been recognized by industry publications as the best
in their field. I make enough money doing this to have a very
nice home, plus a second home at the beach paid for in cash (I
don't like mortgages). But does any of this help with publishing
a magazine?
Since this is an on-disk business oriented magazine marketed as
shareware, and I am a successful shareware author, I do have some
applicable experience. I also spent 16 years working for a fortune
200 company and became their top salesman in 1988. Plus I've been
running successful businesses since I was eight years old giving me
a lot of successful small business experience. And that's
what this magazine is all about: providing down-to-earth practical
advice and innovative ideas for running a small business.
After you look through this first issue I hope you feel we're off
to a good start. Although it focuses on shareware, even if you are
not in the shareware industry, you may find some useful tips and
information. Future issues will focus on other types of small
businesses or, in many cases, small business tips in general. If
there is a topic you'd like to know more about, please write and
request we cover it or ask questions. My plans for this
magazine are heavily oriented on answering your questions and
providing practical solutions for the day-to-day problems you are
encountering. Future issues will have a large letters section and
I plan to publish the majority of the letters we receive (without
regard to whether they are good or bad). So let me hear from you!
If you are interested in writing an article, please contact us.
Please do not send us an article without first getting a copy
of our author's guidelines. I feel we have structured a
unique payment structure that provides writers with a percentage of
the registration fees we receive - with no limit on what you can be
paid. 40% of the registration fees received are reserved for
writers and it will be distributed based on how much of an issue
each writer wrote. If you write articles that are 25% of the text
of the combined shareware/non-shareware issues (advertising is not
included in determining the total issue size), you will receive a
payment that equals:
(% of combined issue) X (% reserved for writers) X (total registrations)
For the above example this would be:
(.25) X (.40) X (total registrations) = 10% of registrations received
Using this approach we hope to be able to provide opportunities for
writers to earn a significant income while providing outstanding
articles for our readers.
I just mentioned something called "combined shareware/non-shareware
issue". What does this mean? We are taking a unique approach to
publishing an on-disk magazine. (There are A LOT of unique ideas
in the HSBJ). Only every other issue will be available as
shareware. Readers who pay the two issue subscription
(registration) fee of $10 will be mailed the second issue as soon as
it is available. If you do not want to get the second issue, you
can just pay the single issue subscription (registration) fee
of $6.
So there it is. Welcome to our first issue. I hope you like it
and find a lot of useful information.
